How to connect an iPad to a Mac mini, with or without a monitor

A Mac mini and an iPad make a tiny, quiet desk, and a travel kit that fits in a backpack. But “connect the iPad to the Mac mini” means two different things: adding a second screen to a Mac that already has a monitor, and making the iPad the only screen of a Mac that has none. Both use Sidecar. Only the second one needs a bit of help.

What Sidecar does with a Mac mini

Sidecar sends the Mac’s desktop to the iPad and sends touch, Pencil and keyboard input back. Your apps run on the Mac mini; the iPad is a display, not a computer. It works over USB or Wi‑Fi and needs both devices on the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication.

A Mac mini is a full desktop-class Mac, so the iPad shows exactly what a monitor would. The catch is that Sidecar was designed as a second display: it assumes the Mac already has a screen where you can click “connect”.

First-time setup: do this with a monitor

  1. Connect the Mac mini to any monitor or TV for the setup session and sign in.
  2. Unlock the iPad and connect it with a USB cable. Tap “Trust” on the iPad if asked.
  3. On the Mac: Control Center → Screen Mirroring → choose the iPad. Confirm it appears as a display.
  4. In System Settings → Displays, pick Extend or Mirror and the resolution you like.
  5. If you will use the iPad as the only screen later, install SideMini now and run its welcome guide while the monitor is still attached.

The first connection pairs the devices. After that, Sidecar can connect while the iPad is on the lock screen, but it cannot connect while the iPad is fully asleep or powered off.

What changes when there is no monitor

Power on a Mac mini with nothing plugged in and macOS boots headless. It creates a placeholder display with no real framebuffer. Ask Sidecar to connect in that state and it reports success, then drops the session a few seconds later, because there is nothing to send. The iPad stays dark.

The fix is to give macOS a display before connecting. SideMini creates a virtual display (2560 × 1780 HiDPI) the moment it sees no physical monitor, connects the iPad through Sidecar, and mirrors the virtual display onto it. When you plug a real monitor back in, the virtual one is removed and SideMini steps aside.

Getting to the desktop with nobody at the keyboard

Any login item, SideMini included, only runs after macOS has logged you in. For a truly unattended Mac mini you therefore need automatic login, and macOS does not allow automatic login while FileVault is on. That is a real security trade-off: anyone with physical access can boot the Mac to your desktop.

SideMini’s “Only use iPad screen” mode explains this and, only after you confirm, turns FileVault off and automatic login on. The restart test

  1. With SideMini configured, unplug the monitor while the Mac is running. The iPad should take over within seconds.
  2. Restart the Mac with the monitor unplugged. Wake the iPad and wait: you should see the desktop within about 15 seconds of the login.
  3. Pull the USB cable and plug it back in; SideMini reconnects on its own.
  4. Let the iPad go to sleep and wake it again. Confirm the picture comes back.
  5. Keep a monitor or Screen Sharing from another device as a fallback for the day something changes.

Small things that make it reliable

Keep the iPad on the cable: it charges, connects faster and survives flaky Wi‑Fi. Set Auto-Lock to Never on the iPad while it serves as a display. If you use an HDMI dummy plug for remote access, tell SideMini it “doesn’t count” as a monitor. And turn on “Lock Mac after the first iPad connection” so an unattended Mac is not sitting open.
